RUSSIAN DISCIPLINE

An interesting story showing the spirit of discipline in the Russian army is reported from Nijni Novgorod. A bomjbadier in the local artillery brigade, who had charge of the disposition of the sentries, committed suicide, and when it came to change the sentry at the magazine the eentry, though informed of what had happened, refused to leave his post. For, according to the military rules, a sentry can only be relieved by the sergeant in charge of the sentry work or by the Czar himself, and as the bombadier was dead the soldier was bound to remain at his post until he was ordered to return to the barracks by x the Czar. Accordingly an express telegram was sent by the colonel in command to the Czar, who immediately wired back an order to the sentry to leave his post. It was not until he read this telegram by the light of an electric-pocket lamp that the sentry allowed" himself to be relieved.
