MR F. N. JONES,

The death of Mr Frederick Nelson Jones which, ns we briefly announced yesterday, occurred at an early hour yesterday morning, came as a shock tc many of his friends, as he was about as usual the previous day. For some ' considerable tune deceased suffered from weakness of the heart,' "-and had experienced several alarming attacks. On Thursday morning he had a slight attack from which lie soon recovered, and he attended to his business SS usual that day. The evening he spent at home in company with members of his family, and lie was particularly bright and cheerful. Soon after retiring he became very ill,, and was in great pain, and expired after several hours' suffering. " The late Mr Jones was born in Nelson in 1855, being a son of the late Mr E. F. Jones, one of the early settlers. He was a man who took a keen interest in local affairs, and though he did not hold office on any public body he was attached to, and took a leading part in, several voluntary organisations. He was a member of the Howard Lodgo of Oddfellows from 1872, and of Court ."Robin Hood, Foresters, from 1877. He served long in the Volunteer Fire Brigadej and was elected a life member on his retirement from active work. Ho was one' of the original members of the Nelson Defence Rifle Club, afterwards holding office Vis president, and he was no mean rifle shot. He . was' one of the promoters'of the Citizens' Band, and at the time of his death its president, an office ho had held for two or three years. Ho was an authority upon racing mat-, ters, and was a. member of the Nelson, Marlborough and Westport Racing and Trotting Clubs, and for many years conducted the totalisator at the race meetings held under the auspices of these clubs. 7 In his younger days-. j he was one of the foremost athletes' of ! Ho won ovor '£200 in prize money, besides several j cups and many trophies in the' seventies, and took part in some of the greatest contests of. his time. On one. ! occasion it is recorded oil the West j' .Coast most of "the money won at a i large sports gathering was handed over to the local hospital. Mr Jones was tlie largest winner of the day, and ho handed over the whole of his winnings. In bis business Mr Jones showed i*o 'little enterprise." Jones, senior, were interred in -the Nolson cemetery yesterday afternoon, and ihe funeral was a very large one, over forty vehicles being in the procession, while members of the Citizens' Band, Nelson Defence Rifle Club, Court Roliin Hood, A.0.F., and Loyal Howard Lodge, M.U., T.0.0.F., preceded the hearse on foot. In addition* to the above representatives attended from the Nelson Jockey Club, the Nelson Trotting Club: the Nelson A. and P. Association, City Club, and the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade. Mr J. O'Neil (representing the Westport Jockey Club), and Mr, J.* H? Pollock, of Wellington (an old associate of -deceased) were also present;"liaving come to Nelson for the purpose. Mr Jones always took ■ a igreaf interest in. children, and on many occasions ho was chief promoter of public gatherings for their sport and pastime; a large number of children joined in the procession in- recognition of the kindnesses of theii* friend. Messrs W. R. • . Ancell. T. M. Brown, W. Coleman, R. Hunter, W. Lane and A. Leckie were the pail-bearers, and tho service at the graveside was conducted by the Bey W. S. Lucas, while the Foresters' service was read by Bro H. Bethwaite, P.D.C.R. Many beautiful wreaths were^seiit fi'om the different bodies the deceased had 'been 'connected. with,. and the family were tho recipients of. numerous telegrams and letters of sympathy from all parts nf the Dominion. *
