THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR.
MEMORIALS AT NEW PLYMOUTH
[United Pbess Association.]
New Plymouth, April 19. At a meeting to-night the subscribers to the Transvaal patriotic fund resolved to devote the balance in hand of £137 (with another sum of £63 promised),, to erect a memorial on Marsland Hill to the memory of the men who fell in the South African war. The "memorial probably will take the form of two obsolete guns captured from Wellington, 'and mounted, bearing appropriate tablets. It is felt that the committee will thus make the memorial distinctly commemorative, and at ,the same time emphasise the military character of the historic old hill, on Which has' just been erected a hangsome marble monument at a cost- or, £700, in memory of the colonial and Imperial troops and Navy who took part in the Maori wars. The latter memorial probably will be unveiled by the Governor on May 7th. .
