ACQUITTED OF MANSLAUGHTER.

Wellington, February 6. At the Supreme Court, to-day, James M. Sheridan was tried for the manslaughter of John McNally. In his evidence, the accused stated that he tried to put McNally, who was drunk at the time, in a place of safety, when McNally turned upon him, and struck him several ttmes. He then left McNally, who followed him and again attacked him. It was while endeavoring to protect him- elf from McNally 's attack that he hit McNally and knocked him dowu. The jury, after retiring for fifteen minutes, returned a verdict of not guilty.
