RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION.
Auckland, April 30. 1 The Hon. J. A. Millar arrived at Tauranga this morning. Interviewed by tbe local Railway League regarding the East Coast railway and the pro- i posed Manakau-Tepuke line (con- j necting Tauranga district with the! Rotorua main line) he said that bo many lines were in hand that he did not favor starting any more until the present lines vrere completed to a paying point. The completion of the Main Trunk line at the end of next year would release £300, 000, and two other lines would also be completed about that time. He freely admitted that the East 'Coast was entitled to railway communication. There were three alternate routes, but he had beard that surveyors were unable to find a practical route fom the Motu. Mr Herries, M. U.R., stated that he was through tbe route the other day, and that ho found that a suitable route had been found at a reasonable cost. The Minister said it seemed advisable that they should go in for the Mamaku line first, that was only a matter of 18 miles and as soon as the Main Trunk line was completed be would do nil he could to assist.
