NOTICE OF MOTION.

According to notice Mr Lock moved "That in the opinion of this Board, school books can be supplied to the various School Committees more economically and satisfactorily by the I booksellers in the district than by I the annual distribution from the j Board's office; the Board therefore resolves to take the necessary steps ;to terminate the contract for the j supply of books and material and to j dispose of the present stosk to the ibest advantage." | Mr Shepherd seconded the motion, which was supported by Mr Smith and opposed by Messrs Fair, Baigent, Bailie, Beuke, and the Cbairmsn. The motion was lost on the voices. Mr Franklyn obtained permission to withdraw bis notice of motion in reference to the new girls' echool. he said as the majority of the mem bers were now in favour of ttfe school he would not press his motion. Mr Lock said the reason that tenders for the erection of the new girls' school was deferred was because the Board bad already applied to the Government for a grant and were awaiting a reply t> their application and not on account of the action of one member as stated in the leading article in yesterday's "Colonist." in accordance with notice given Mr Lock moved that in view of the fact that representatives of the PreßS do not attend the first day's meeting of the" Board each month, it is desirable that ouly ordinary routine business be transacted on such first day meetings, as the public will then get fuller information on many matters of importance, which at nresent is not being given. The motion was seconded by Mr Smith and opposed by Messrs Shepherd. Beuke, Bailie and Fair, who considered that a great deal of business would be crammed into the second day, which would- entail an evening sitting, which they opposed. The motion was lost on the voices. They agreed that it would be unreasonable to expect the Press representatives to attend on two whole daya and were of opinion that the proceedings received sufficient publicity. Mr Lock gave notice to move that this Board takes into its consideration at its nest meeting the question of appointing a competent carpenter to supervise or carry out the various works authorised by the Board in all parts of the district, and to report on all applications which affect the building grant. Mr F. W. Smith gave notice to move that a committee be set up consisting of three members of the Board who together with the Inspectors shall examine all applications for teacherships and submit recommendations to the Board.
