WRECK OF THE SHIP GREAT ADMIRAL.
Per United Press Association, Adelaide, March, 4 The ship Barcore, from Puget Souudß, reports picking up in latitude 47 north, and longitude 128 west, the orew of the American ship Great Admiral. A heavy gale was raging when a mass of wreckage was sighted, consisting of the after housetop of tbe Great Admiral. On it were fifteen men and one woman in a precarious position. The ship was brought as near to the wreck as was prudent, and with the aid of large quantities of oil a boat succeeded in reaching the wreckage. After many attempts all the castaways were got on board the Barcore. These included the master and mate, the mate's wife, and twelve seamen. The cook and steward succumbed during the first night on the raft* ' The people are in a pitiable condition. They spent two nights and part of two days clinging to the housetop, without food, water, or shelter, Had it not been for the wreckage acting as a breakwater, they would have perished, as the terrific sea must have washed them off. During a south-east gale the Great Admiral, which was laden with lumber, was- found to.be making water fast, and she was thrown on her beam ends. The captain ordered the masts to be cut away. The crew then crawled on the after-housetop, when the mizzen-masfi snapped about eight feet above the house. A tremendous wave swept tbe vessel, and carried off. the top part of the house with the crew on it into the sea. On the morning of December 24feh the barque Andrew, bound from the Sandwioh Islands to San Francisco, hove in sight. The shipwrecked people were transferred to her and landed at San Francisco. The Great iidrairai was owned and commanded by Captain Sterling, who valued the vessel at twenty - n'ye thousand pounds. There are no insurances.
