SPREADING ISLAMISM BY PHONOGRAPH.
The interesting announcement is made that at a recent meeting of the Ulema, the body of spiritual directors of the great Mohammedan University of Al Azhar, kr Cairo, the use of the phonograph for popular instruction in the Koran was favorably discussed, the opinion prevailing that the employment of phonographic means of propagating the faith was not contrary to the teaob, ing of the Prophetj and did not offend the sanctity of the holy writings. A proposal, however, to consider the advisability of taking out a policy of insurance against fire and accidents wa9 rejected almost unanimously, it being held that such a proceeding would be contrary to the fatalistic doctrine of "Kismet.''
