NELSON JOCKEY CLUB,

ANNUAL RACE MEETING. FIRS T DAY. Officials— Chairman, E. Finney? Judge, J. E. Bartlett • Treasurer, J. A> HarleyJ Starter, W. Coleman'; Timekeeper, R. Hunter; Handic&p'per, J. C. Henrys; Clerk of the Scales, C. E. Harley ; Clerk of the Course, T. Newman ; StewardSi F. Trask, W. N. Franklyn> R> Mcßae, J. A. Harley, H. Newman, E. Finney, H. Eedwood, atid Dr. Pearless ; Committee, E» Finney, J. E> Bartlett, F. Trask, W. Coleman, K Hunter, J. A> Harley, H. Newman, S. Bolton, and *J. Sharp, Junr. ; Secretary, J. Glen. The Nelson Jockey Club, though favored by splendid entries which gave promise of a record meeting, Were unfortunate in the matter of weather. The rain of previous days had made the enclosures sloppy and the course heavy, while the threatening aspect on April the 25th was sufficient to deter large numbers from attending who would have enjoyed spending a day at Richmond Park under favorable weather conditions. The ladies especially were few in number, and many regular attendants at the Nelson Club meetings were notieable by their absence. However, notwithstanding i all drawbacks, the attendance was greater than could have been expected. Coming to the sport itself, this left little to be desired. There were good fields for every event, and the dividends paid show that there were no foregone conclusions, and reference to the figures given in the details subjoined should be convincing that the " crossrunning " alleged in some cases had little foundation in fact. There can be no doubt that the events were very open and the winners were difficult to " spot " The trot was the only race of the seven on the card that did not give general satisfaction as being worth going to see, and the galloping races showed that Mr Henrys, thehandicapper, had brought his horses well together, and the starting of Mr Coleman could not well have been improved upon. Mr J. E. Bartlett, the Judge, had no decisions to give ihat caused him any troubie. Mr Newman again ' made a most efficient clerk of the course, and there was very general regret at the accident to his fine mount. Mr C. R. Harley has filled the office of clerk of the scales on several occasions, and gets through his woi'k expeditiously and with exactitude. Mr John Glen, the Secretary, had everything in his department in first dass, order, and with his assistant, Mr Louisson, was able to carry out the heavy work devolving upon them without delay or hitch of any kind. The Stewards were generally attentive to their duties, and exercised close supervision over all that was going on. The totalisator, as for many years past, was in the capable hands of Mr F. N. Jones, and was worked as well as it could be worked. To do away with a matter of complaint of former years the Stewards purchased a large bell, which was hung near the Judge's box, was rung as soon as a start was made, and the sound could be distinctly heard even in the most remote parts of the Park. The inside and outside totalisators at £1 and 10s per ticket respectively were worked separately on this occasion, and in all the sum of £1805 was passed through the machines. Last year the sum on the first day was £2193, and in 1898 £1716. Mr Glen had straw laid over the greater part of the saddling paddock, and this helped in a great measure to keep down the mud nuisance. For to-day's racing the course will be harrowed and rolled, and straw laid down over the lawn, which will be a great improvement. There was an entire absence of any rough element, but Sergeant Donovan, in charge,- had several men on duty, and Detective Nixon, of Wellington, was also on the ground. The Club, as usual, also employed Mr J. Walden to prevent the attendance of those very undesirable gentry the "spielers." The Garrison Band, under Bandmaster Trussell, considerably enlivened the proceedings during the intervals. A big word of praise is due to Mrs Schroeder for the capital luncheon provided in the Grand Stand luncheon rooms, the excellence of the rapast being a matter of general comment. Very general regret was felt and expressed when it became known that Mr Henry Redwood was an absentee, with his string of horses also, through the Waimea river being in flood. The presence j of the genial " Father of the New Zealand Turf " was much missed, and his ill luck was the worse in that he was considered to have a very good chance of winning in one or two events. We, and many others, hope to see Mr Redwood at the Park to-day. The train arrangements were admirably made with regard to time, suiting the public very well, but loud and bitter were the complaints of the want of accommodation provided on the 10.45 a.m up train, and the 5.10 p.m. down train. The number of carriages was miserably nadequate for the number travelling by these trains, and compared with ordinary holidays or agricultural show days the number of passengers to be carried was by no means out of the way. We saw as many as eleven persons travelling on the platform of one carriage, with ten on the platform opposite. At the time of writing the weather is clear, and promises well for a fine day, while the good sport that is likely to be seen should induce a larger attendance than on the first day. The following are the results of the various races : — Fibst Hubdle Handicap, 40 soys : one mile and a-half ; over six flights of hurdles.
