WARS AND RUMORS OP WARS.
{To the Editor of the Colonist)
Sib, -It cannot be denied tba". there is every indication of a coming struggle before very long, and no one oan earnestly tell where it will stait, or how coon the great Fowct 3 will meet in real earneßt. The action of the European nwiiona daring the paßt few month* has presented a sorry speo sole, and the proceedings have been a disgrace to the whole world— their actions have filled the breasts of the sober and industrious millions of the whole globe with apprehension of having to hill one another io Buit the purposes of ? Ah, tbat is the question 1 Whit do we mean by the great Powers— do we mean the English, Frenoh, Italian, and Russian people ? Certainly not. If we did there would be no dang r of war cr disagreement. No ; the p. ople of the vatioua nations are but tbe tools tbe great Powers use, tbe mere material of whiob the great Powers build their greatness. If we look into the question minutely, we shall easily perceive that tbe great Powers are really tbe European financiers, and it ia they who pull the strings that move the mooarchs, who fanoy they rule the world (a la Emperot WiUi&xn).
Have we never reasoned to ourselves as to why the great Powers, who do no: stir a hand to stay the Armenian massacres, were bo soon up in arms to prcteot the Turks from the Greeks, by blockading Cre c? Surely it was becauße European finanoera h we many millions invested In Turkey, and the dhmemberment of that disgraoeful empire would mean tbe loss of their money. Tbe dis»greeble faot remairs that the industry of the whole world is in the hands of fianoiers, and tbe mighty guns of the great Powers will have to be fired on Christian or any other kingdom, if necessary, to proteot tbe interests of the3e nil important mortgagees, and lhii is a state cf things that should maKe everyons blu°h. Exactly what is going on under the oloak of diplomacy no one really know?. The fact is that capital must have its rights protected, and the emancipation of the Cretans or the Armenians would damage or destroy those rightp. The rights of the dspitalits oause the wrongs of the rest of the world, and the hand that destroys those rights will topple over nearly every throne in the universe.
The cable baß lately informed us that troops are about to be despatched to the Tmnsvaa 1 . F.r what reason? Beoaaso there is a corjfliotion cf interests in tbut country - namely, of German financiers versus English.
It is co U3e holding meetings, Baying prayere, or weeping over the wrongs of tbe Armenians or Cretans ; it is not (he vanity of Emperor William, or the jealousy of Russia that ib to blame. . It is the greed of the financiers, who throttle liberty and poison oivilization. These paople have only one god, and that is gold. How long shall it continue ? We look the other way, and pretend not be listening. There is only one remedy, and that ia to make monopoly illegal and millionaires impnsßibe.
Yourer, etc., A.B.
