The Hospital Bail. — The work of decorating the Provincial Hall for tbe Hospital Ball was so far completed yesterday that a gallery for the orchestra was ereoted, and a large number of flags were draped, while the Ju?y room has been furnished bs a drawing room. There seems to be no doubt that the attendance will be large, and a most enjoyable evening is being looked forward to. The orohestra will consist of the following performers :— Miss Levy, violin ; Mr R. Bird, cornet ; Mr Davies, clarionet ; Mr H. Finney, piano ; Mr Pollard, piooolo ; and Mr Martin, double bass. Donors of refreshments are requested by advertisement in this issue to send tbeir contributions to the Courthouse.

The Rechabites.— We gather that the Reohabites bave resolved to build a hall in Bridge BtreeS, near the Salvation Army Barrack?.

Railway Works, BELGBOVB.The laying off of work on the Midland line from Belgrove to Motupiko is to be proceeded with at once, and we learn that Mr T. Roberts, C E., the present Sanitary Inspector of the City, has been selected for the duty in oonsequence of his intimate knowledge of the section of the Midland line whioh is to be comple:ed.

A Coming Event.— We laar^ that it is m* tended to give a minstrel entertainment and dramatic performance about the mildle cf Seitember in aid of tbe funds of the Nelson ttowintf Club. There will be about twenty performers, and new songs and choruses have been obtained for the occasion. It ia intended to make the enteitainmeot unusually attt aotive, and rehearsa's are now taking place.

Insurance . ates.— We hesr that a meeting of tbe looal representatives of Insurance Companies was called the other day, the object, it is understood, having been to consider whether any recommendations in tho direction of lowering, or in any way a' taring, the tariff now in operation here, should be forwarded to the Conference about to bsheld in Melbourne for the purpose of revising rates of insurance. The meeting terminated, it ia said, without any resolution rehtive to rat s being arrived at, and the meeting ul imately adjourned till after the Melb urne Conference has bteu held. Tnis is understood to mean that tbe Nelson insurance agents decline to recommend any reduct ; on in the extremely high rates now charged.

WAKtriELDi — Tbe open meeting of the Hope of Wakefield Lodge was largely attended latt Light, the Temper^nc3 Hall being orcwded. Mr F. Peart ably presided. The programme wa3 very varied and entertaining. r .Jhe Bra?s Band, under the leadership of Mr Richard Wallace, played a number of selections daring the evening, whioh were muoh tßjoyed, the verdict being that the Band's music was very good, particularly when the short time of its f. .-rotation was taken into consideration. The Jchnson Brothers (3) created much uiorrimect with their mu^roal and vooal oontributiens, and secured an enthusiastio recall. The Choir from Bright^eter sang well several sacred nielodie?, while a soio given by Miss Forster, and a duett (humorous) by Miss and Mr Wutson were well received. Excellent recitation* were CDn*ribut°d by Mrs Vercoe, Mr K. Bnker (humorous), Mr A. Day, and Mr Chiug (humorous). A comic reeding given by lir Vercoe, and brief speeches b? the '. bairman and Mr Bond filled up th prcgamme. which was kej<t going until ten o'clock. Miss Baigent did good service as acoompanyist. A collection wes mide in aid of the Band fund. After tbe meetiog the members of tbe Nalson, D^ver'a'e, and Wak-fie d Lodges bad supper together, when a pieasant reunion to:k place. The Nelson contingent, whioh went out in one of Mr ThomaVa i'a'tsce cars, reached home safely at a quarter p^st oco o'clock this morning.

Ambdlanck Lectures. — The third cf the series cf Firet 3 iti lectures took place at the Drill Sbed last night, when there wai an increased attendance, between 40 and 50 being present. The subject taken by Oaptiin Surgeon Hudson was that of "Fraotuiea, or Broken Bones." Simple, compound, commuted, transverse, oblique, and complicated fracture* weie minutely explained in a very interesting manner. Dr Hudson desoribed the difference between fractures and tiisloc£tionß, and the various eymptoms and sensations by which either may be distinguished. Fractures of the skull, jaw, ribs, o larbone, thigh, arm, foot, and spine were dealt with, and a practical illustration of the methods cf bandaging in each esse were shown. At the conclusion of the lecture a number cf questions wera answered by the leoturer. The subject for tbe fourth lecture, by Captain Surgeon Gibbs, on Wednesday next, will te " Sca'ilß, Bums, and ;- oison?." A bandaging olass for those who d^site practice in 'his important art will take place an hour pror to the lecture, seven o'ciock. Accidentally Shot. — Yesterday morning an elderly man named Harford, and who is an inmate of the Old People's Home, met with a very remarkable and at the came time painful experience. He was walking from tbe Home towards the centre cf the town, when, as he was passing near Mr Baigent's mill, he was struck on the side of tha face, tear tbe ear. by a small bullet, which lodged in the flesh. Harfo'd walked to the Police Station, and was then taken to Dr Roberts, who removed ihe bullet, which had evidently been fired from an air gun. It was no doubt by accident tbat Harford was struck, but there is a pretty good suspicion as to who used the air gun.

Dovedale. — A correspondent writes as follows : — There was a good attendance at the regular meeting of the Dove Excelsior Lodge on Saturday evening, Rro W. Tuorn, C.T., presiding. Afcer the ordinary business the qiiarierly reports of the officers were read and adopted. The funds show a creditable balance, and the membership shows an in-, crease of ten. Sis Duncan, District Deputy, assisted by Bro J. W. Win, _odge Dtputy, and Bro Duncan, then installed the following officers :— Bro W. Thorn, CT ; Bro F. Win, V.T ; Bro G. Vaughan, S.J.T ; Sis I.
