GOVERNOR OF N.S.W.

London, June 17. Visoonnt gHampden (son of ex- speaker Brand) has been appointed Governor of Mew Booth Walea. Jane 18. Viscount Hampden, the new Governor of New South Wales, is a Liberal Unionist. He proposes to leave wi'h bis wife and tbiee upgrown daughters early in September, but if essential is prepared to go to the Colony at an earlier date. It was only on Thursday last that he was offered the position, and after consultation with Lords Oarrington and Jersey, former Governors of New Booth Wales, and the Duke of Devonshire, yesterday, he accepted. Tbe Viscount has had n6 colonial experience ezoept as ft direotor of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand for fourteen years. The Press generally approves of tke Appointment. The ' Times ' consider the appointment cannot be taken exception to, although the selection is a conspicuous result of the Unionist manifesto, and a confession of weakness on the part of the Government since it was notorious that the Government deßired, but were afraid, to appoint Sir Arthur D. Eayter to succeed tbe late Sir Robert W. Duff. The ' Daily News ' states that the appointment will gratify Anst-alia's passion for a titled Governor, and indicates that Lord Rosebery places Imperial interests above those of party.
