VICTORIAN RAILWAYS,
Melboubne, May 24. Although the Railway Committee sgteed that none of the suggested lines through the Msllee oountry had any present prospect of profitable return, they said there waß justification for the Government making one or more cf tha lines if they can get Parliament to declare the Mallea country inalienable, tha idea being that the Government can make a great deal of profit over and above the loss in lines by leasing inie Msllee ten is. It ia understood that the Committee reommend that a 1 la jd owners near all fu'ure Hdos Bhall be taxed on t.e betterment principle. Thera appears no possibility of the Committee endorsing the Ministers' proposals to cut down the standard gua^e of a number of existing lines to narrjp- guage, as that would be ex** pensive and not benefioial, and would add farther to \he already large expensa3 of Btan^ dird rol ing atook.
