COLLINGWOOD
[from oub own correspondent.] MAGISTRATE'S COUBT. [Before A. Greenfield, Esq., S.M.] Great interest was manifested in tha aseault case, Graham v. G-oldiag, at the above Court last Friday. It appears that the complainant (Graham) is Chairman of the River dale School Committee, and de-» iendant had children formerly attending t'aat school, but owing to alleged insulting lan« guage to the late teacher (Mies White) they were suspended till ample apo'ogy had been made. However, iiv Baker was recently appointed to the sohooJ, and aoting on the Committee's instructions refused to teach Golding's children. The morning they were presented at the school, the Chairman attended to see if the Comnrttee's resolution had bern complied with. Meeting defecdant on the school verandah, hot words ensued between them, which culminated in Golding B' riking at and preventing Graham entering the school, and subsequently wound np on the frrass in " a rough and tumble," the complainant emerging therefrom with a nice pair of " black eyes." The evidence tended to show Golding wa3 the aggressor, and acted contrary to law, for which the Msgh* trate deoided to fine him 403 and cotta, or 14 da)s' imprisonment. Mr Maginnity ap~ peared for the complainant, and Mr Hayes (Takaka) for defendant, bchool matters at Riverdale and Rockville are tatber in ill odour at present. What I have gleaned so far is from a mo^t reliable eourc?, and I can plainly £cc it will end yet by teaohera vacating oertain Ecboo's. The pestering some of the country teachers have to put up with from vindictive persons throngh imaginative evila is beyond all bearing. If the well-doing 0! the children were properly regarded at home, a teacher's task would be easier, and weald lessen the number of squabbles.
Another case of great local importance heard by the Magistrate was Eeddm 7. Grant. Claim for damages to a paddock rented by the litter. Gratt is a tawmiller. He laid a tramway through the paddock, which plaintiff contended was only rented for grazing purposes. The expiratiou of lease will soon take place ; the agreement defined no purpore. Several witnesses were called relative to damage, and they considerably differed. Mr Hajes for defendant rdsed the " question of title." His Worship considered the point raised was fatal, it being beyond his jurisdiction, and non-suited plaintiff with costs, remarking that tbe case, if desired, mußt be carried, further in a higher Court. Mr Maginnity was for plaintiff.
Mr Bain's butter factory at Kailuna U nearing completion, and Boon we hope to have our " local factory brand " successfully competing with outsiders. The enterprise is certainly deserving of reward.
Johnston's United is not dead jet, a dying concern has often a long live, and so it ia with that olaim. Nine years ago I heard it decidedly spoken of as lasting a month at the most. Still it exists. Many changes have intervened, but I thiok the Directors have now the right man in the right place. If there is any person at all who knows that peculiar claim, and can work itadvantageously it is Mr William Jthnston." Men with high credentials in that ground are at a loss ; 'tis very different to worMng a regular, quartz reef with the orthodox rules for a guide, theoretical knowledge there is out of the question, local knowledge alone is required, and that the. present manager possstsses. Since his return he has started well, dlozs. of retorted gold for the fortnight's work is better, and I hope ere long to record, a
dividend. The resumption of the management of the mine was taken under most disadvantageous circumstances, yet his first return tea fair one. Dredging is this time to get a fair start in Ihe Aorere. Hitherto many applicants have applied imbued with elegant prospects, but only in a short period to cool down, let everything lapse, and the river runs on undisturbed. The Golden Bay Dradging Company, however, has called for tenders for timber for the punts, Ihus it is evident they are determind to go to work immediately. There is no doubt the gold is there, but the. heavy waah— large boulders— is the chief obstacle. The management ara satisfied they can cope with all difficulties, it is to be hoped they w 11, and that success will attend their venture.
On good authority I have it tb at operations ! at Onekaka in connection with the iron , deposit will get a start. Messrs Kerrand Adams not having complied with the labor conditions, -have cancelled their lease of country, which for a long period past has been locked up. A company of gentlemen intend applying at once for the cancelled area. Aliogeher the prospects cf thiß neighborhood a-e bearing a brighter aspect. The phonograph was exhibited here on Friday night, to a fair audience. Some of the selections were very good, but the majority oou!d not be interpreted with much surety. The managerial attempts to pive those pre Bent the full benefit was greatly hampered by a band of unruly larrikins, who persistently interrupted, and consistently kept up a f usilade of missiles across the Hall. It is time some practical method was adopt ;d to put down such unseemly behavior. October 6th, 1894.
