SWIMMING.

[COMMUNICATED.] A swimming competition among the pupils of the Girls Oollege, took place yesterdayat the ladies bathing place at the Maitai. The display was witnessed by a large number of ladies who evinoed much interest in the aquatic accomplishments of the girls, and great pleasure at the very creditable manner in which they acquitted themselves- The awimmers deserve great credit for the, promptness in coming forward for the different events, and their individual energy in contributing to tee success of toe races. The competitors all made an excellent display, but among thoie deserving special mention is M. Rowley, whose impromptu feats of diving were most creditable. The raoes were for prizes offered to pupils of the Girls' College, and as many of the girls are leaving at the end of the year it was decided to bold the races at onoe. The pablia, are, however, reminded that these are distinct from tlie regular Swimming Olub races, whioh will be held in February. In allotting the prize for good form in Bwimming somß difficulty waa experienced in determining the successful Qaadidate, several being nearly equal, but some iiWe ! defeois suoh as inoompjetenesfls of b/esst! strode, keeping the head too far out of the water, &o, helped the judge to make his! decision. The small number of Miss Catley'a pupils who competed is to be regretted as those who took part refleob great credit on her as a teaohtr. Dr Maokie acted as judge.
