Chbistchuboh, January 28. Mr Rolleston addressed his constituents at Avon, and (defended the action of the Middle Party last session. While the party were desirous of ejecting Major Atkinson, they stipulated that Sir George Grey Bhould not be Premier. After Jhearine his measures next session, it would be time for the House to decide whether the Premier should remain in office or not. k good Btable Ministry could be had independent of either Sir George Grey's or Major Atkinson's Ministry. Referring to Sir G. Grey's remarks at Auckland re removal of Canterbury pastoral licenses, he said they were misleading to a serious extent. He did not consider Sir G. Grey tbe man to be at the head of affairs at the present juncture. He did not think he could support the preient Government. A vote of confidence was carried unanimously. Auckland, January 28. The Appelles, from London, has arrived. She left Grennook on the 16th October. She brings 250 immigrants, all well. The Hinemoa arrived this morning. Sir George Grey goes to Waikato early on Wednesday. The Working Men's Club is successfully established. At a meeting of the Bay of Islands Coal Company, the report referred to improved prospects, in consequence of the Union Company using the coal; a dividend of ten percent, was declared. The City Council has received the Government subsidy, Wellington, January 28. It is understood that Sir George Grey has invited William Hutchison, late Mayor of Wellington, to contest the seat to be vacated by Mr Bunny in Wairarapa. It is said that he would meet with the support of the local press and a large proportion of the electors about Greyton. A movement is being initiated to induce Sir George to contest the seat vacated by Mr Travera after his return from the Waikato. The weather is favorable, and the matoh was continued at 12*15. The was a meagre attendance on the ground. The Australians have scored 148 with the loss of seven wickets. The Wellington score was 91. The Rev. D. Morley is reappointed editor of the " New Zealand Wesleyan," and the Rev. T. Buddie principal of the college. The following representatives were elected to the next Sydney General Conference ■:—The Revs. Crump, Morley, Buddie, Reid, Fitchett, Kirk, Richardson, and Bavin. Laymen— Dr Burrows, Messrs Turner, Buddie, Manchester, Jackson, Harris, Hobbs, and Moxham. It was resolved to float a connectional fire insurance company, with a guarantee fund of not less than £3000. Five candidates for the ministry have been received. Three ministers are to be sent for from Victoria, and two from England. It was decided to hold the next Conference at Auckland.
An attempt was made this morning to blow up the sunken hulk Eli Whitney, which was cut down by the Taupo some months ago. The hulk lies about two hundred yards from the end of the Queen's Wharf in thirty feet water. A charge of twenty pounds of dynamite was used, which was set off by electricity from a battery supplied by the Telegraph Department. There was a sharp report, a few pieces of timber came to the surface, and the mainmast canted to an angle. There was very tittle commotion in the water, and no shock was felt at the end of the pier.
Continuation of oricket match between the Australian Eleven and Wellington Twenty-two:—Tbe Australians closed their innings with a score of 166. Wellington went in about three, and by six, when tho stumps were drawn, twenty of the team were out for 77. They will finish their innings to-morrow morning, hnd then play a single innings matoh to fill up the rest of the day. The best scorers in tbe Australians were—Bailey, 33 not out; Gregory, 31. Best Wellington soores, 11 and 13; eight failed to score a run.
Dttnedin, January 28. Bishop Nevile is said to be the purchaser of the Milton Pottery. During the week there were upwards of one hundred applicants for admission to the Normal School which is already over-orowded. Havblook, January 28. A quantity of salmon, brought from Wellington, were liberated successfully in the Waimakariri river. No fish died on the journey. Sydney, January 26. The Tanjore arrived with the Suez Mails at King Gf orge's Sound yesterday. Tricketthad a walk over at the Anniversary regatta for the championship of the Australian Colonies.
