THE BALKAN PASSES.
These are seren passes over the Balkans :—• 1. Sobumls to Karnabad, yia Tshalikarak and Dobral, called the Bogaz Pass, Tery difficult und narrow, easily defended and combining fluvial with mountain impediments. 2. Pravadi, fia Eoprikoi and Jenikoi to j^idos, called the Chenga Pass, diffioult but aucoeisfully vied by General Kudiger with the 7th Euasian Corps in 1829. . ' 3. The coast road from Varna to Burgai. 4. Tirncva to Keflanlik, called the Shipka Pass, the most practicable of all, not rery diffioulb or steepj and easy to be forced. • ;" ; 5. Tirnovato Silvno, called the Demir Eapu (Iron" Gate), very steep, difficult, and almost unexplored. 6. TirnoTi or Osman Bezar to Kasan, and thence to Karnabad, Tery difficult. ': 7. The Sowats Pass to Tatar Bazardjik, almost impaßiable. ■•> .-■■..
