AUSTRALIAN MARKETS,

The Argus of December 29th has the following: —In the import market business to-day has been quite at a standstill. Scarcely an inquiry for any description of merchandise has been experienced, and there has been nothing whatever done at auction. Trade in breadstuff's is extremely inactive, there being no supply whatever offering. Flour is wanted, and good old being scarce, very extreme rates are realised ; up to £14 has been obtained for fine old Victorian, and £13 10a to £13 15s bas been got for other brands, but in either case only small lots were quitted. Fine old wheat is also much wanted, and a long price could now be got for good samples. New has not yet come forward ; the quality of what has been seen is not spoken of favorably, being soft and not suitable for baking purposes as yet. Oats are very slow, and without the slightest enquiry. Maige is steady at 5s 3d, and we do not bear of anything being offered under. Sugars are without animation ; the cargo of the Don Ricardo will be offered on Thursday. Tbe usual monthly telegrams have been reveived via Aden to 10th December, from which we learn that during the month 800 tons sugar had cleared for Melbourne, and one vessel of 400 torn

na loading. Nothing had cleared for Adelaide, but wo small vessels were loading; 1500 tons reHnery „ e ar bad cleared for Sydney. About 500 tons were brward to Dunedin and Christchurch. There was ,o alteration in price, but it is stated now that the laid will not bo up to 100,000 tons, instead of over, 9 was at one time anticipated. Trade eaies of lennessy's pale brandy, 1872, are reported at 7s 9d. telegrams have been received from London to 25th net that the market had an advancing tendency.
