"WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

TUESDAY, Jtoe 15,

The monthly meeting of this Board took place at the Bridge Hotel.

All the members Were present, After the minutes had been read and confirmed, The Ovebseeb read the following report:— "During the pasfc six weeks the main trunk line has needed oonstant supervision ; in the Stoke district all the metal at the different depots has been carted on to the road, but it has not been sufficient to effect all the necessary ropairs, the crust of the road being very thin, and gone in eeveral places j whenever weather permits I am getting some from the beach. Provision must be made during the summer months for a larger supply of gravel at the different depots. An extra hand has been employed, and will be required for another month. I may here state that extra labor has been necessary in all the districts. The amount expended here, including an advance of £30 to Mr Canton for works on Quarantine Eord amounts to £68 ss. 9d. I think it advisable to call the attention of the ratepayers to the 42nd clause of the Highways Aot, whioh might be advertised, as the hedges and trees are causing considerable damage to the roads. Waim6a East: repairs have been done on the Appleby road amounting to £47, and also £36 83 from Hope road to Eylee' Creek. It will be necessary to lengthen the bridge at Hodder's corner on road leading to railway station. I should recommend that a three-foot barrel drain 40 feet long be substituted, the Board having a supply of wedge bricks on hand. Mr Connell has finished his contract fdr breaking stones, viz., five hundred yards. In Spring Grove repairs amount to £45 15s, this includes the day labor. Wakefield repairs, £23 10s.; gravelling in 88 Valley, by Mr Kinzett, £12 10s.; IMr Holland has finished road in Pretty Bridge 1 Valley, Board's contribution, £7 10s.; Mr Griffiths' contract in Hoult's Valley, £30, also Mr Boddington's, in Wai-iti Valley, £118 10«., (this includes an extra culvert), £7, are completed. The approaches to the Wai-iti river, near Bell Grove Inn, require some repairs, estimated cost, £5. In Waimea West the wages are £21. Mr Heintz has completed contract ht forming Moutere HilU, as the fillings will be very soft and bad this winter. I have, cut a short siding round them on the solid; the hills are very bad, little or nothing can be done to them at present, but a large expenditure will be requisite when the weather takes up. Mr Osborne's account for bricks delivered at kiln is £52. In Dovedale Mr Eobert Wallace has not been able to complete his contract, gravelling Pigeon Valley, on account of wet weather. The Surveyor has not invited tenders for further Swelling how* .hating r °FM£fefc&&« duumft

a the necessity of postponing. u the same for at least 11, three months. Mr Akersten is prepared in iht of Spring to undertake the forming of road from/Stagg'i ig contract to meet the Stanlej Brook road, the payid ment to be made in land. It would be a good i; opportunity to throw a rough foot bridge over the le Dote by KiellVas the pile engine ii on the spot; d amount expended in district, £41 6s 8d " i Resolved, That the Bell Grove ford' be repaired, r. but that in view of the present state of the fuads 0 the Overseer discontinue the carts during the month, >t and also carry out any possible retrenchment. For 1 the same reason the proposed alterations at the cul>l ?ert by Hodder'i, and the bridge in Dovedale were »f postponed for three months. 0 Resolved, That notice of the election for three s members of the Board in July, be given, and that c duly authorised persons attend on those days to rei, oeive rates from persons who hare not had an oppor- - tuaity of paying the same. Resolved, That the next meeting be held on Tuesj day, July 13, so as to give time for the result of the t election to be made known. t The Sbcbetabt produced a copy of return pre- . pared at the request of the Select Committee of the 1 Provincial Council to whom had been referred a petition from certain persons in Doredale praying for separation from the Waimea Board in consequence of alleged neglect and injustice. This return showed that from the annexation of Dovedale in 1867 to the present time, £543 has been received by the Board from rates in that sub-district, while the expenditure during the same period has been £2,723. The Sbcbetaby also produced a return compiled by request of the Government for transmission to the General Government, showing the Board's receipts during the years from 1871 to 1874. A letter was read from the Provincial Seoretary enclosing one from the Colonial Secretary, requesting information as to the working of the Act for the recovery of rates from absentees, with a view to amendments therein. A sub-committee was appointed to prepare a reply. Another letter was read from the Provincial Secretary requesting the Board to allow the Overseer to take charge of the four bridges in the Waimea district, and to supervise any small repairs, the cost of which will be defrayed by the Government. The Secretary was directed to reply that the Board had agreed to the request of the Government. A letter from the Motueka Valley Road Board requested information as to whether the Board intend to continue the laying out of the road in Pigeon Valley towards Stanley Brook. The Secretary was directed to reply that; it is the Board's intention to do so at the earliest opportunity, and that they have been awaiting the result of a promised exploration for a better line than the present one. . Mrs French wrote requesting that something di might be done to render passable the traok from her n property to the main road. The Overseer was }>• directed to attend to it. :

Messrs J. Busch and Stratford attended and requestsd assistance ia rendering passable the road leading to Aniseed Valley. The Board a»reed to contribute, not exceeding £5. Warrants were signed for £638 17s 6i.
