WATER! WATER!!
To the Editor of ike Colonist.-
Sib,~You are not probably aware that persons are in the habit of turning on theii water in several parts ol the town by day and uight. There are streets ift Nelson that boast a clear stream of water even in this drought.'
Surely, seeing that they deprive others whose houses are more distant from the main pipes, and situated on higher ground, of that for which they have to pay, arid which they have a right to receive, the police should interfere, or these horticulturists should pay for water by the foot, as for gas. I happen to live at a considerable distance from the centre of the town, and on rather high ground, and am obliged to keep my tap perpetually turned on in order to get an occasional tub-full, and even so have to rely a gi.od deal on a well during the summer months.
It seems only fair that persona should pay according to their consumption rather than the rateable value of their houses.
I hear that brewers and persons employing machinery driven by water power —as for instance Mr Webster—have to pay extra rates. It Beems hard upon these gentlemen that those who consume wastefully even larger quantities of water should getioff scofc free, though -they greatly interfere with the justrights and the comfort of their neighbors. ; lam, &c* /.,; , College Hill.
