FINANCIAL REFORM LEAGUE.

PUBLIC MEETING AT MOTUEKA.

A public meeting was held at Motueka, on Friday evening last, to aid the New Zealand Reform Lea<nie in promoting a reduction of the public expenditure, and a revision of the mode of raising the revenue. W. Wright Esq., was called to the chair. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Fearon, Mr. Thorpe, Mr. Macmahon, and by the Chairman, who all alike condemned the reckless expenditure of the Government, and its burdening the colony with additional taxes to raise the required revenue. The following resolutions were passed:—

" 1 Thafc this meeting heartily concurs in the resolutions come to at Nelson to form a Financial Reform Leagued

"2. That that this meeting is of opinion that the present Ministry have forfeited the confidence of the electors of the colony, by their attempts to mislead the public with regard to financial affairs, and by their misappropriation of the revenue.

"3. That ifc is the opinion of this meeting that the time has arrived when it becomes the duty of the inhabitants of this colony to act in concert for the purpose of obtaining a thorough financial reform, and a general re-organization of all departments of Government.

"4. That this meeting is of opinion thafc the resources of the colony are more than sufficient to meet the requirements of an efficient Government, without having further recourse to the money market, and they trust that every legitimate means will be used by the representatives of the people to prevent the Government resorting to so improper a proceeding.

"5. That, in order to give effect to the foregoing resolutions, this meeting is of opinion that it is desirable to appoint in Motueka a committee, to co-operate with the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Reform League, and to take.sunh measures as they may think necessary to protect tbe iuterests of the tax-payers."

It was finally agreed thafc the Motueka committee should consist of fifteen members, of whom fouc should form a quorum, and that ifc should be a subcommittee of the Nelson branch of the League. It was agreed that the committee should meet last

evening.
