Methodist Anniversary

As notified elsewhere the congregation of Kawhia Methodist Memorial Church will hold their anniversary services on Sunday next. The date commemorates the founding of the first Christian mission south of Auckland by the Rev. William Wbon on 24th November 1834, 115 years ago, and also the laying of the foundation stone of the Church by King Koroki exactly 100 years later—24th November, 1934. The structure is of ferro-concrete, with symbolic Maori carvings decorating the pulpit, while on the walls near a beautiful memorial window are brass tablets bearing the names of the early missionaries of the district. There are .also models of the Tainui and Aotea canoes, from the occupants of w’hich are descended all the Maoris who peopled the West Coast from Auckland to Cook Strait, including Waipa Waikato, and Taupo.
