TE AWAMUTU COURIER Printed on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays FRIDAY, 25th NOVEMBER, 1949 ON WINNING THROUGH

ALL the political promise, and certainly the public desire, is for a stable economy, security, and continued progress. The way may differ in opinion, but the objective is everywhere shared. But the simple facts remain, and were stated very plainly by the Federation of British Industries recently. “ W;e must face the fact that as a nation we must work harder without increasing the cost of production and concentrate on the things that matter.” That curely, is a straightforward and compelling statement which goes to the root of every political promise and economic hope. ‘'The spur of competition is still the most effective aid to efficiency,” runs the statement, as pointing the way out of all the controls and devices that have tended to throttle industry and production. In short, it is the people who create the means, and it is within the limit of the means supplied that they find security and sufficiency. And that is the simple rule of life.
