TOMOANA COMPETITION

WAIKATO PRIZE-WINNERS

Despite a slight decrease in the number of porker and baconer carcases exhibited at the annual Tomoana competition held at Westfield on Monday, the number of entries and carcases from the Te Awamutu district showed an increase over last year. There were 171 entries representing 684 pigs, an increase of 40 pigs.

Total carcases are as follows, last years figures are in parenthesis:— This year, porkers: 2040 (2212); baconers: 2887 (2286); total, 4927 (4498). Value, £23,967. Auckland Section, this year, porkers: 1132 (1492); baconers 1364 (1184); total, 2496 (2676). While Te Awamutu competitors did not do so well as last year, they were by no means disgraced. The North Island Grand Championship was annexed by Mr J. G- Fowell, of Whitford, who also won the Auckland district baconer and porker championships. His prizes totalled £135. Mr Fowell, who has been a competitor for a number of years, exhibited carcases derived from a Large White-Berk-shire cross. The Large White boar is of his own breeding, but based on the Johnson strain. His Berkshires come from the Longley-Tambour stud. The following are the Waikato results:—
