THE RAINFALL
THE FIGURES FOR KAWHIA SAID TO HAVE BEEN HEAVIEST FOR MANY YEARS During the year 1948 rain fell in Kawhia on 115 days, the total for the twelve months being 61.18 inches. Official records covering previous years, but according to old residents the fall was the greatest for many years past. One Maori, well into the eighties, avers that it is 66 years since Kawhia experienced such a long spell of unsettled weather. The rainfall for each month was as follows:
Total 61.18 During the month of December rain fell in Kawhia on 14 days. One effect of the wet spring was to make the pastures come away luxuriously, but, on the other hand, the rain rendered hay-making a difficult job. In January of this year rain fell on 14 days, totalling 2.21 inches. The maximum fall, .44, occurred on the 12th.
