PRIMARY SCHOOL

HEADMASTER'S REPORT MUCH WORK COMPLETED DURING HOLIDAYS In his report to the Primary School Committee on Wednesday night, the headmaster (Mr N. F. Rigby), stated that the school had opened for the 1949 year with a roll of 805 pupils. This showed an increase of 36 on the roll as at the end of April last year, when school reopened after the poliomyeiities epidemic. With an extra teacher on the staff, all rooms were now occupied. Calf Club, Gala and Parents’ Days had been very well attended; and exemplified the interest of everyone concerned.

During the vacation the re-sealing of asphalt paths had been done and by all appearances an excellent job had been carried out. The committee was now awaiting word from the Education Department, regarding a further re-sealing project. The caretakers’ (Mr and Mrs Scott), had everything in first-class order when schooi reopened. The rooms were neat and clean, and the grounds were well looked after. A new motor mower which the school had acquired was a valuable asset, enabling the long grass in the big paddocks to be coped with, thus giving a larger area for playing grounds. The school was most fortunate in having Mr Scott as caretaker as he took a very keen interest in keeping the grounds and buildings in first-class order.

Two new pianos arrived at the school during the holidays and these would be an excellent benefit to the infant department.

A picture benefit provided by the local theatres was very well received by the children and of great benefit to them.

The chairman (Mr L. W. Spence), said the theatre proprietors were to be thanked for this useful amenity, and the committee whole - heartedly moved accordingly. School at Kihikihi

“After all these years, and after a great deal of endeavour by the committee, the Education Board is now proceeding with plans for a school at Kihikihi,” said the chairman (Mr L. W. Spence). It was to be a six-roomed school and would considerably relieve the congestion at the local primary school. It had been advocated by parents for many years and will be a very desirable accomplishment. Matters of General Interest

The headmaster (Mr Rigby) had been very dubious of re-opeing the school swimming baths due to the town having had a positive case of poliomyelitis. It was decided to reopen the baths and allow only children who had parental consent to enter them.

There has been no heating system provided for the temporary classrooms yet, and the committee accordingly decided to support Mr Rigby in writing to the Education Board to obtain some definite knowledge re the installing of some heating system.

It had been discussed in the past, but no fresh developments had arisen for furthering the water system for fire-fighting around the school and : t was decided to make renewed efforts to obtain some definite knowledge. The committee exercised its power to grant a school holiday for the A. and P. Show to be held on Wednesday, February 23. A combined schools’ sports will be held in Albert Park on Thursday, March 3.

To conclude the meeting, Messrs Cunliffe and Daniels were appointed as the visiting committee for March. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 2.
