Bands Under Canvas

As from March 17th until March 21st the racecourse at New Plymouth will be temporarily converted into a canvas town to house approximately 1000 bandsmen from all parts of the Dominion who will be competing in the New Zealand A and B grade pipe bands’ championships. Not only will it be the first occasion on which the championships have been held at New Plymouth, but it will also be the first time that all competing bands have been accommodated under canvas.

Cannot Storm Transport Alliance “There is not one ex-serviceman of the recent war, nor, I believe of the first world war, in business as a carrier at Stratford; no matter how good these soldiers were at storming the ramparts of Alamein, they cannot apparently storm the ramparts of the Transport Alliance at Stratford,” said Mr J. Callaghan at a sitting of the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr P. Skoglund), at Stratford, appearing for a returned serviceman who applied for permission to do general carrying in Stratford. The application was not granted.
