LIQUOR NEAR HALLS

CELEBRATING BARBARIAN’S VICTORY AUCKLANDERS CONVICTED AND FINED Two Aucklanders who accompanied the Barbarian football team on the. occasion of their recent visit to Te Awamutu as a result of having liquor in the vicinity of the local Town Hall, found themselves charged with that offence in the Te Awamutu Court before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., yesterday. The defendants were John Nuttall and George Raymond Newdick. Nuttall, in a letter admitting the. offence, said he had accompanied the Barbarian football team to Te Awamutu and he was celebrating the team’s win. Newdick, in his letter, said he also accompanied the team. He was a married man and it was not usual for him. to attend dances or drink. “I was having a day out, but it will not happen again,” stated Newdick. Both pleaded guilty. Sergeant A. Bissett said that Constable J. G. Williamson was on duty near the Town Hall on the night in question, when he saw Newdick taking some liquor out of a car. The constable called him (Sergeant Bissett) and they saw the men drinking near the Town Hall. They had four bottles of beer. Each man was convicted and fined £2 and ordered to pay 10s Court costs. Pirongia Offence Peter Atley pleaded guilty to a similar charge, the offence being committed at Pirongia. Sergeant A. Bissett said that he and Constable Williamson were on duty on the occasion of a dance that was being held in the Pirongia Hall. They saw two men make a “get away” but they saw defendant drinking. Atley had no excuse to offer, saying it was a “fair catch.” He was a married man and his wife was living in Auckland, while he. (Atley) was working with a road construction firm.

The defendant was convicted and fined £2 and ordered to pay 10s Court costs and 2s mileage.
