FARMERS’ ENTERPRISE

MEAT MARKETING SCHEME TREMENDOUS GROWTH IN SIX YEARS The successful operation of the meat marketing enterprise sponsored by Federated Faimers (Auckland Province) and its remunerativeness to the farmers participating was commented upon by the president of the Tauranga branch (Mr H. O. Lloyd) at the October monthly meeting. . The undertaking, he said, had been developed from a £2OOO yearly turnover to one of £470,000 within six years. The last quarter’s business had shown an increase of 300 per cent, over that of the quarter immediately preceding, and business was expanding almost too rapidly to be conveniently handled. A subsidiary organisation was supplying the local market, and at the present time 75,0001 b weekly was being supplied to the master butchers in Auckland. A substantial profit was being shared by the farmers and the master butchers, and so successful had the scheme proved to be that inquiries were being made concerning it by the master butchers in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Mr Lloyd pointed out that foreign meat interests were making £2,000,000 profit yearly from the New Zealand meat trade, and it was hoped, through this co-operative enterprise, ultimately to conserve the greater part of this gum for the benefit of the New Zealand meat producer.
