RACING AT ELLERSLIE

ALISON CUP DAY CHUNG CHONG MAY SUCCEED (By “Old Rowley”) With Foxwyn and Sylis, two Auckland Cup winners engaged, both of which have shown every indication that they are as good as ever, and also the good handicap performers, Precedency, Silver Lighting, Chung Chong, Sir Bian and Ascot. Lad engaged, the Auckland Racing Club is presenting a fine field for the Alison Cup, of £l5OO, run over 1 mile and 3 furlongs. In addition, Hot Pursuit, which looked extremely well under the care of G. Cameron, when recently seen, Foxfable, Peggy O’ and a newcomer to middle distance open company in Dumbarton, which is likely to play his part in events this season, it is not easy to visualise the ultimate victor.

For that matter the open sprint, which may be run in divisions, presents no easier problem and had this meeting been the December one it is quite easy to imagine such a field parading- for the Railway Handicap. The first division has Theophilus occupying the limelight after his return to form at Cambridge and this brilliant galloper may still be a force to be reckoned with in important sprints. Then there is Niloch, Regal Praise, Grand Tourist and Exeter, which may be capable of surprising, but like Regal Praise he has yet to show his paces for the current term. Little Park Royal has raced with success in the best class and eould easily upset calculations. On paper it looks just a good thing jjpr Flowerburfi in the second division and the manner in which this Haziat galloper has been performing on tracks which did not suit his style, places him in a very good position if the present fine spell holds. Lord Revel will no doubt throw out a strong challenge, while the lightweights Master Coronach, which is a bold galloper of whom the best has not yet been seen, and Beaute ought to add interest to the race. Bonny Pay still seems to retain his speed and he cannot be entirely overlooked.

The Ponui Mile brings together in contest milers which have the respect of the Auckland racing public and Iwo Jima (topweight), Balmacara (which will appreciate the better going) and Cambria, are all up to top class, particularly the latter. Balgowan, despite his failure on the second day of the A.R.C Spring meeting, is a bold enough galloper to take a hand in the finish and has drawn handily at the post. Master Ted showed a glimpse of form at Whangarei and now sets the problem of whether he will improve sufficient to make a creditable showing in firstclass company. Rating ought to add interest to the contest, but form horses are Swift Fox (a very likely improver), Flying Robin and Brockton, the latter having run two sound races at Ellerslie last month. White Blaze is about due to show her best form again and is a definite prospect. Bustany is another which stands out.

Among the hacks it looks as though Aylesbury, if started in the Melrose Handicap should give a good account of himself, although his prospects appear even brighter if reserved for the Milford Mile. Travel King, Bouquet, Formats, Eastern Charm and Premonition have shown up in their latest engagements, while Regal Chase should surprise in the first division; there will also be attention centred upon Bonny Fox. In the second division Double Chance, Veni.o and Earldale have raced attractively, while place-getters in Lola May, Hunopay, Discovery, Ballaview, Star Performer, and Kyrat, which ran fourth at its first start and appears to be very promising, should add attraction to the race.

The Milford Hack Handicap has Race Lad (a double winner at Whangarei), Huntore, Distributor and Pavaals, all with good form, Kuku Nui seems on the verge of a return to form, and the consistent Tatanga must have prospects. Tamaiti Kino and Royal Beau look the best of the others.

It looks as though the improvers Duncan and Snappy might hold the seasoned British Mint at 13 miles. Others of interest are Race Chum and .Cornell, the former having slighfly better credentials at this stage. Perdition and Captain Jesse should add interest to the racing. On form Tauloch and Mignonette certainly stand out, but they are conceding weight to such improvers as Chubin, Coonbridge, Vice-Chancellor, and Gay Coronach. Outlook might show up, for this Hawke’s Bay candidate has been shaping well. Although Distributor won so well at his last start, he may find it difficult to repeat, for the high-priced colt Ruling Prince should give a good account of himself. There is also the good colt Len Rosa which lost caste somewhat by his failures after the Avondale Guineas, an improvement in the track conditions may see him to better advantage. Corondal, Battle Royal, Battling Brave and Master Dink ean be expected to make thenpresence felt in the first division. Atomic has good form to recommend him and most opposition may come from Quick March, Queen’s Knight, General March and Master Ballater, with Valley Trail, Hunting Mac and Thornton Hall also racing prominently. The first race is due to start at approximately 11 a.m. and the day’s racing will conclude at 4.45 p-m. with the Ponui Handicap. The following horses may find favour with the public in their engagements:— Melrose Handicap, 7 furlongs: First division: Faithful Knight, Formata, Bonny Fox. Second division: Double Chance, Ballaview, Kyrat. Milford Handicap, 1 mile: Aylesbury, Tatanga, Wonder Boy. Tiri Hurdles, 13 miles: Snappy, Duncan, Race Chum. Alison Cup, 1 mile, 3 furlongs: Chung Chong, Foxwyn, Sylis. Cambria Handicap, 2-year-olds, 5 furlongs: Vice-Chancellor. Chubin, Tauloch. Takapuna Handicap, 11 miles: First division: Ruling Prince, Distributor, Battling Brave. Second division: Atomic, Queen’s Knight,

General March. Cheltenham Handicap. 6 furlongs: First division: Theophilus, Niloch, Bridge Watcher. Second division: Flowerburn, Lord Revel, Master Coronach. Ponui Handicap, 1 mile: Brockton, Balmacara, Master Ted. TROTTING AT ADDINGTON SECOND DAY OF METROPOLITAN MEETING The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club will continue its meeting at Addington when form should work"" out fairly satisfactory. Main events on a full programme are the Ollivier Handicap, limit 4.22, 2 miles: New Zealand Derby Stakes, / 1J miles; and Sockburn Handicap for trotters, limit 2.51, 11 miles. Indications are that the track will be in better order than last week, even though it was fast on that occasion and some of the visiting horses are expected to show to better advantage having settled down fairly well now. The first race starts at 10.45 aim. and the last race is timed for 3.58 p.m. The following horses may attract attention in their engagements:— November Handicap, limit 4.35, 2 miles: Commander Scott, Lady Averil, Mountain Hall. Intermediate Handicap, trotters, limit 4 43, 2 miles: Jason’s Quest, Sure Harvest brkt., Fairy Wings. Wm. Hayward Handicap, limit 3.35, 1 mile, 5 furlongs: Belhall brkt., Worthy Gold brkt., Maori Holm. Ollivier Handicap, limit 4.22, 2 miles: Highland Fling brkt., Knave of Diamonds, Great Belwin.
