Much Travelled Cyclist

After having toured the world five times by ship and bicycle, competed in 24 countries, where he established numerous distance records, and six years’ service in England, Canada, and Australia with the Royal Air Force, H. K. McKenzie, a Wellington professional cyclist, has returned to New Zealand in the vessel Wairuna as an engineer. McKenzie took part in the world professional cycling championships at Zurich in 1946. He intends to compete in the 1948 world track and road championships in Holland. In 1934 he went to England and established six unpaced world records which still stand. In 1937 he set three records for distances over 300 miles in the United States. After his war. service he returned to cycling and immediately set two fresh records, 1138 miles in 75 hours 53 minutes 31 seconds, and 320 miles (Switzerland from end to end) in 32 hours 31 minutes 10 seconds. On his way back to New Zealand, he cycled across the United States and Canada, covering 4738 miles in 39 days.
