Making Tyres in New Zealand

Production of motor vehicle tyres in the Dominion should begin next year, according to Mr G. C. W;'. Reid, managing director of Reid (New Zealand) Rubber Mills Ltd. He said there was still some difficulty in obtaining plant and raw materials, but he had been able to ensure that production of tyres in the Penrose factory of his company would not be held up through lack of raw materials. As far as deliveries of plant were concerned, they were being pushed ahead, but the problem of buildings still remained because of shortage of labour. Mr Reid added that tyre turn-out in America was still at its peak, and the factories appeared to be overtaking the demand. Truck tyres were being constructed mainly of natural rubber, but car tyres and tubes contained a proportion of synthetic rubber.
