OBITUARY

MR SYDNEY JOHN NOBES OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO COMMUNITY It is with regret that the death is announced of Mr Sydney John Nobes, of Mandeno Street,, which occurred in the Waikato Hospital yesterday. Mr Nobes was born at Harrow, England, in 1889. He married Miss Bessie Bell, of that town, in 1903, and he and his wife came to New Zealand in 1912, settling in Auckland. Mr Nobes went to Cambridge in 1919, and after several years’ residence there he went to Ohaupo, removing to Te Awamutu in 1927. Mr Nobes, during the active years of his life, was engaged in the motor body building and blacksmithing trades, and in the conduct of his trades he set the same high standard that actuated all his activities. Mr Nobes was imbued with a most commendable sense of civic duty, and in 1944 ho was elected a member of the Te Awamutu Borough Council, in which capacity Mr Nobes rendered outstanding service to the community. Mr Nobes was a member of the Works Committee, the Transit Housing Committee, and was the Council’s supervisor of the borough saleyards. Mr Nobes’ practical experience as a tradesman and the exercise of sound judgment was brought to bear on the discharge of those duties with resultant benefit to the ratepayers and residents generally. Mr Nobes rendered outstanding service to the Te Awamutu Red Cross Society, and his faithful attendance at the Depot in Alexandra Street and his ever-ready willingness to assist that body to the full will long be remembered by those associated with him in that capacity. He was a keen bowler for many years and there was no more highly respected member of the Te Awamutu Club than Mr Nobes. He was a member of the Druids Lodge and he occupied all the offices of that body. He was a member of the Church of England. Mr Nobes also took a keen interest in all movements that had as their objectives the welfare of the town. He served it faithfully and well, and his passing will be deeply regretted. It is a loss to the community but his life should be an incentive to others to follow his well worth while example. He is survived by Mrs Nobes, one son, Mr Jack Nobes, and one daughter, Mrs R. B. Miller (Betty Patricia) of Puketarua, and to them the sincere sympathy of a host of friends will be extended. There are two grand children. The flag flew at half mast at the Town Hall to-day as a mark of respect. The funeral took place to-day.
