IMPROVING EDUCATION

NEED FOR SPECIALISATION AN AUSTRALIAN VIEW The following, taken from the Melbourne Age, is of interest locally in view of the interest taken in educational affairs in New Zealand: — The curricula of our State and public schools require a complete overhaul along improved lines existing in other parts of the world. This opinion is expressed in the current issue of the Record, the journal of the Melbourne Chamber' of Commerce. “ But one thing is certain,” the journal says. “ While remuneration of teachers is on such a low scale—a scale that would be scorned by many unskilled labourers—it is unlikely that there will be attracted to the profession the best type of citizen. “ Commercial men could make a valuable contribution to education by establishing scholarships to assist suitable children to obtain advanced education. A further method of assisting education by commercial men was the encouragement of study amongst staffs particularly in large organisations.” The article adds: “ With the enormous expansion of science during the war there will be opened entirely new fields for study in the post-war period. This will need specialisation at our schoojls and universities, and commerce could assist by endowing chairs for special subjects.”
