“ Once the world gets back to peace there is going to be a tremendous demand for all things electrical,” said the chairman of Te Awamutu Electric Power Board (Mr J. T. Johnson) at Friday’s meeting.

In extending his good wishes for the successful return of Te Awamutu Electric Power Board as at present constituted the chairman (Mr J. T. Johnson), at Friday’s meeting, said the electors might get another Board but they would not get a better one. He hoped that in the interests of the district they would all be successful and come back to the Board table to serve the district in the way of electric power. Accountant to Power Board

Recently Te Awamutu Electric Power Board advertised for an accountant and set up a sub-committee to deal with the matter. The secre-tary-manager (Mr D. T. B. McArthur) reported to the Board at its meeting on Friday that twenty-two applications had been received. The committee recommended the appointment of Mr V. B. Reid, of Wellington, and the appoinment was confirmed by the Board. Mr Reid, who is a married man with a family, has been a member of the Civil Service for a number of years. He is expected to take up his duties this week. The appointment has been rendered necessary by the forthcoming retirement of Mr McArthur and the subsequent promotion of Mr M. Barnett.

Mr McArthur’s Retirement Mr D. T. B. McArthur (secretarymanager of Te Awamutu Electric Power Board) reminded the Board at Friday’s meeting that he was due to retire in September, and he asked members to fix a retiring date. He had carried on for two years longer than he had intended at the request of the Board, but he definitely was retiring in September. Mr J. T. Johnson (chairman) said that September would be the half-yearly period of the Board’s financial year, and it would be in the interests of the Board if Mr McArthur remained in his position until 30th September. Mr Johnson moved along those lines, and the motion was seconded by Mr E. H. Rhodes and carried.

Progressive Party On the front page of this issue of the Courier are advertised some general town improvements that the candidates of the Progressive Party would endeavour to effect if elected in the forthcoming Borough Council elections to be held on Saturday, 27th of May. Community effort is the only sensible way to provide healthy recreational facilities for our young people in these days of total war, and Te Awamutu lacks neither the financial power, the goodwill, nor the energy to cater for these needs. Ail that is required is a progressive Council, and in Messrs I. Roberts and R. H. Annibal the Progressve Party has two personalities well known in sporting circles as football referees and officials, and in Mr J. Mercep, another of the party’s candidates, a generous financial supporter of any project associated with young people. The other improvements suggested in the advertisement should need no recommendation to citizens as their need is obvious to all.
