CROQUET CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD A SUCCESSFUL YEAR The annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Croquet Club was held in the Bowling Club pavilion on Monday. The president, Mrs H. H. McKerrow, thanked all office-bearers and members for their co-operation during the year. The following annual report was read by the hon. secretary (Mrs J. Elliott): — The 1943-44 season proved highly successful financially and socially, keen interest having been displayed throughout the year in all club activities in spite of the numerous handicaps imposed by war conditions. Some of our members have suffered bereavements, while others are passing through anxious times—to these we offer our sympathy. Card functions were held throughout the year—the social committee being responsible for the afternoons, while the executive committee made a noutstanding success of the evenings which were continued once a month during the summer. Our thanks are due to Mr and Mrs Boryer for the use of their home; to Mrs Olsen for providing the sandwiches for the evenings, to donors of trophies, and to all members who assisted in making these functions the success they proved. During the year the club" - took charge of the Red Cross and Patriotic shops, realising very satisfactory returns in each instance.

A working bee prepared the pavilion and lawns for the opening day, Saturday, October 2, 1943, and thanks are tendered to all who assisted on this occasion. The usual invitations were extended and we were pleased to welcome visitors from several neighbouring clubs. The Mayoress, Mrs L. G. Armstrong, declared the lawns open and played the first ball. Congratulations were conveyed to Mrs D. McArthur upon her 22 years’ membership of the club, a shoulder spray being presented by the president. Field days held in November and March were well attended, the sales table returning very creditable profits on each occasion. In November a team from Taumarunui played for the S.A.C.A. “A” Cup, but were unsuccessful, the matches resulting in Te Awamutu gaining 104 to Taumarunui’s 61. Later in November Te Kuiti paid a visit as challengers; Te Awamutu again retained the cup by 79 points to 54. In April the Te Kuiti Club again challenged, the matches resulting in Te Kuiti losing to Te Awamutu by 29 points to 104. On each occasion the club was represented by Mesdames McKerrow, Jourdain, Olsen and Chunn.

As challengers for the S.A.C.A. “B” Cup, Mesdames Paul, Ryan, Meredith and McGovern played for the club at Te Kuiti in December but were unsuccessful.

In March a challenge match was played at Te Kuiti for the “Impasto” Cup, which was retained by Te Kuiti by 154 points to 94. In the “A” Grade Mesdames McKerrow, Jourdain-, Olsen and Chunn represented the club, while Mesdames Rainey and Cullen played for the “B” Grade. Three members spent several days in Hamilton in March as club representatives in the N.Z.C.C. Silver Button competitions—Mesdames H. H. McKerrow, “A” Grade; G. Paul, “B” Grade; and L. Marsh “C” Grade; the latter winning the “C” event. The congratulations of the club were conveytd to Mrs Marsh accompanied by the presentation of a shoulder spray. The various club competitions wire keenly contested, with the following results:—Collins Cup, Mrs E. R. Olsen; runner-up, Mrs J. Elliott. Goodall Cup, Mrs L. Marsh. Armstrong Trophy “A,” Mrs J. Tea hostess arrangements were capably supervised by Mrs A. H. Roberts to whom we convey our thanks

To Mrs A. J. McGovern we tender thanks for donating trophies for the season’s competitions. Our thanks are due also to all donors of trophies for the various competitions held on field days, opening and closing days. We take this opportunity of assuring them that their support in this connection is highly appreciated. The club is grateful to Mr Nobes for his assistance and for his presentation of a gavel. It will afford members great satisfaction to know that the extended area of No. 4 lawn has been levelled and sown. The club expresses thanks to Mr W. G. Macky for his assistance in levelling. Next season promises sound experience for those members who are keen to improve their game—a full sized lawn and regulation hoops will provide additional interest. A definite acquisition to the pavilion is a very fine notice cabinet presented by Mesdames McKerrow and Webber. To all sub-committees thanks are tendered for services rendered throughout the season.

In conclusion we wish to thank the Bowling Club for the use of their pavilion and the Press for interest in reports.
