Miss Doreen Bishop, of Tuakau, has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs A. H. Richards.

The friends of Mr J. C. Brown, Puniu Road, will be pleased to hear he has now recovered from a major operation in a private hospital in Hamilton. He has gone to the home of his niece, Mrs F. B. McKeon, of Ngaruawahia, and later to the home of his brother, Mr D. Brown at Hoe-o-Tainui to recuperate.

Before business proceeded at the Waipa Racing Club Committee meeting on Friday evening the president paid a tribute to the sportsmanlike assistance the Club had always received from the late Mr G. B. Melrose. The meeting passed a vote of sympathy with the relatives, and recorded its recognition of all that Mr Melrose had done.

Mr S. A. Empson was congratulated by members of the Waipa Racing Club Committee on Friday evening in the very welcome news that his son, Sergeant A. H. Empson, M.M., had safely rejoined the forces in the Middle East. Mr Empson was asked to communicate the Club’s hearty good wishes to his son and to congratulate him on having gained distinction on the field of battle.

It is announced by the Minister of Defence that the following officers are appointed to the Waikato Mounted Rifles:—Lieutenants (temporary) are raised to the rank of Captains (temporary) G. Gilchrist, J. C. Clough, W. S. Macky and A. R. Griffiths. Second Lieutenants (temporary) to be Lieutenants (temporary) are: G. L. Gibbon, L. H. Bregmen, C. G. E. Cross, L. K. Macky and S. J. C. Prescott. The following are raised to the rank of Second Lieutenant: D. E. Buchanan, P. K. Bishop and I. G. Andrews.
