WINTER FUEL

POSSIBILITY OF SHORTAGE OUTLOOK- IN TE AWAMUTU Householders are threatened with a shortage of winter firing this year, due partly to war conditions and partly to factors which have been operating with increasing force for several years. Gathering winter fuel is a task which engages miners, bushmen, and merchants all the year round, whereas the average householder does not begin to consider his needs till the approach of winter.

The primary factor resulting in the shortage of firewood is the scarcity of trained axemen, many of whom are serving with the forestry units of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Others have found employment at timber mills more profitable. Another factor which has been apparent for some years is the retreat of the timberland, increasing the haulage problem.

Supplies of household coal have been short for some time, largely due to the demands of coal-burning industries, including the railways. ATe Awamutu coal merchant said yesterday that there had been a shortage of supplies for 20 years, but the prospects now were among the worst experienced. Transport is another difficulty, for petrol rationing restricts town deliveries.
