EQUALITY OF SACRIFICE

LACK UNDER DEMOCRACY OUTSPOKEN REMARKS MADE AT CAMBRIDGE “I feel that democracy has failed,” said the Mayor and Chief Warden of Cambridge (Mr Edgar James) at a demonstration on Saturday last of emergency -fire-fighting at the Town Hall, in thanking the people of Cambridge for their attendance.

This showed, his Worship said, that they realised fully the danger confronting this country. Those present were willing to give up their Saturday sport and other recreations to learn what had been done for their own protection.

“Not all the people are making sacrifices, however,” he went on, in drawing attention to the amount of work put in by the fire-fighting personnel of the E.P.S. to prepare emergency equipment and to train themselves for the job. “Democracy only.produces equality of service for those who are prepared to give it,” he said. “The others think ‘everything will be alright’!” Mr James contrasted this complacent attitude with the state of affairs among people living in dictatorship countries. “The men of the auxiliary fire brigade are fulfilling their obligations to a splendid extent,” he added.
