WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

THE PUAHUE BRANCH SUCCESSFUL GATHERING The monthly meeting of the Puahue Women’s Institute was held in the Panehakua Hail on Ist April, when there was a very large attendance of members. The New Zealand National Anthem was sung, and the prayer was read by Mrs Mahon. All present stood in silence in respect to the memory of those who had “ passed on.” Mrs Mahon (treasurer) and Mrs Garfit (secretary) were re-elected for the coming year. Mrs Curral was elected delegate to the conference in Wellington. During the afternoon Mrs Dean (President) called upon Mrs McMillan to accept, on behalf of the Institute members, for the valuable work she had done, a beautiful umbrella. All hoped that as she was leaving the district the present would bring back memories of her past Institute days. Bouquets were handed to Mrs McMillan and Mrs Simpson, who also is leaving. In doing so Mrs Dean said she hoped it would not be long before they were back again in Puahue with their friends. A number of competitions resulted as follows: Mr W- G. Park’s Cup: Mrs F. Hastie 1, Mrs Currall 2. Best Bloom: Miss Cole 1, Mrs McMillan 2. Holder of Bloom Cup (for .most points during year): Mrs Judge and Mrs Garret tied. Fruit Cake (judges: Mrs Stratton and Miss Lintott): Mrs Currall 1, Mrs Cavanagh 2. Neatest Hold-all for Soldiers (entries to go to Red Cross): Mrs Judge 1. Mrs Skerman and Miss Margaret Glasson had charge of the sales table. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames E. Hattaway, J. Parish, and Ferguson and Miss P. Ferguson. It was decided to keep a war book. The ode to friendship was sung, and the singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close.
