THE GAME OF GOLF

THE TE AWAMUTU CLUB OPENING OF THE SEASON The formal opening of the golf season by the Te Awamutu Club took place on the local links on Saturday afternoon last in the presence of a large attendance of members. Very few visitors were present, the petrol restrictions no doubt being responsible for the absence of the usual contingents from neighbouring clubs. The acting-President (Dr C. Blundell) teed off, and play in a combined Stableford match followed, the winners being Mrs Ralph Armstrong and Mr John Wilson. After a dainty afternoon tea, served by the ladies, had been partaken of, Dr Blundell, in formally declaring the season open, welcomed one and all to the links and trusted that all would do their best to make the season a successful one. Many of the members were absent serving with the Armed Forces, and he invited all present to do their best to keep the Club going as usual. Times undoubtedly were difficult, but it was their duty to “get together” and maintain the Club intact and the grounds and appointments in good order. That was due not only to themselves, but to the boys who were with the colours, so that when the latter came back they would find that members who could not go away had kept “the flag flying.” The President (Mr Joseph Sterritt) had arrived by this time on leave from a military camp. In the course of a few appropriate words, he endorsed Dr Blundell’s remarks, and especially appealed to old members to “pull their full weight” during the coming season, so that the Club could successfully function as heretofore.
