HOLD HIGH YOUR FAITH

AMERICAN EXHORTATION HELPING NATION’S WAR EFFORT “No sooner had news of the treacherous attack on Hawaii reached the American people than we became at once a unified nation,” wrote Mr John W. Thomas, one of America’s leading industrialists, in a statement which was widely publicised throughout the United States and which we reprint in the belief that it will be helpful to New Zealand’s war effort. “All previous doubts as to our future course were forgotten,” continued Mr Thomas, “and to-day every American stands ready to answer any call for service in the critical times that face us. “Make no mistake about it, the road ahead is very likely to be a long, hard one. The quicker we put every effort into the task the sooner it will be over. “For those who are not in uniform there are many things we can do that will contribute to the war effort. One was stressed by the President in his radio talk of December 9. We can refrain from discussing wild rumour and avoid repeating unconfirmed, discouraging news which destroys morale and aids our enemies. “We can take better care of _our health. Every day’s illness weakens our support to our fighting forces. “We can buy defence bonds and stamps and contribute to the American Red Cross freely and cheerfully. Every cent we subscribe will strengthen our own individual will to win and aid final victory. “ We can join the campaign against waste. Salvage things that formerly were thrown away. Save waste paper, scrap rubber and metals, rags and old clothing. The Government needs them badly in our war production. Get more service out of everything we use in our daily life. Waste to-day is sabotage. “And finally, whatever our individual job, we must do it with greater determination and energy in order that our fighting forces may be equipped as speedily and adequately as possible to defeat an enemy that would take from us every bit of freedom, every one of the ideals that has made American way of life worth while. “Refrain from loose talk, guard your health, give your best thought and effort to your work, and hold high your faith in America’s future.”
