WASTE OF BENZINE

Sirj—l regret your correspondent, A. W. Gallagher, did not ring the Headmaster of the Te Awamutu District High School before he wrote his letter in regard to the wastage of petrol by the Ngahape School bus. The position is accurately stated, but the solution is not so simple. Both the High School Committee and Education Department have endeavoured to station a teacher-driver at Ngahape or Te Mawhai. There is no schoolhouse at Tokanui Cross Roads. The old school could perhaps be converted at considerable cost into a bus garage or schoolhouse, but it is probably more economical to use two gallons of petrol daily than go to this expense. Most of the teacher-drivers are married and, unless a position is so advertised, are within their rights in refusing to live in country districts. If means were available a teacher could perhaps be conveyed out to Ngahape, with the risk that he would find his bus petrol tank empty. It appears your correspondent and the committee have been wasting their time trying to save petrol. All that seems necessary is to change the name of the bus to “Education Board Horse Float,” and all the petrol needed will be supplied ad lib by a benevolent Government. G. DONALDSON, Te Awamutu High School Committee.
