TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

(As reported in Waipa Post February 9th, 1917). At a meeting of the Farmers’ Union Federation a short discussion arose on the scheme, as outlined by the Provincial Executive, for the acquirement of a suitable block of land and of a course of instruction extending over several years to gradually establish returned soldiers on the land. Members alluded to the far-reaching effects of such a scheme and the difficulties ahead in its undertaking. Despite heavy enlistments during the past week, a big shortage in both drafts was recorded when the voluntary enlistment register closed for the 27th and 28th reinforcements at Hamilton. During the past week 36 volunteers have been attested. Or Henderson, speaking at a Borough Council meeting, urged that the “Big Tree” at the Mutu Street (now Rewi Street) intersection be suitably railed off and that a few seats be placed within the enclosure. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote to the Borough Council meeting with reference to the lands in the watershed area at Pirongia and the suggested re-arrangement of boundaries so as to give the Borough control of the actual watershed. This was agreed to. At a recent meeting of the Te Awamutu Fire Brigade the following were elected honorary members of the Brigade:—Messrs L. G. Armstrong, C. T. Rickit, W. Jeffery, E. J. Taylor, A. E. Patterson, S. H. Dwen, _C. Simes, S. A. Empson, J. Spear and’A. G. Warburton.
