SCHOOL TEACHERS
MILITARY SERVICE QUESTION GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE Further withdrawals of head teachers for military service are likely to cause disruption of the school system and to react unfavourably on the efficiency of schools, stated a memorandum from the Education Department received by the Auckland Education Board at its meeting on WednesdayThe position had been discussed with the Director of National Services, and the following decisions made;— No appeals should be lodged on behalf of assistants unless they were teachers of mathematics or science in secondary departments of district high •ehools. No appeals should be lodged on behalf of sole teachers or head teachers of schools graded 1,2, and 3, but head teachers of grade 4 schools and higher should be appealed for. This applied to head teachers who had already been mobilised with the National Military Reserve or who had been drawn for service in the ballot of 20th January, or who might be drawn in future ballots for Territorial service.
The Training College Department advised that it had not approached the Man-power Committee with a view to arranging suitable dates for Territorial training of students selected for admission, as it was understood they had not been called up for short term training but for the duration of the war. The Department considered these students as being on leave, and they would be given an opportunity to undergo their professional training on their release from military duty.
The Board decided to appeal for 11 headmasters and three assistants who were teachers of mathematics or science in the secondary departments of district high schools.
