WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
THE PUAHUE BRANCH DELIGHTFUL AFTERNOON There was a good attendance of members at the Puahue Women’s Institute meeting held in the Panehakua Hall on Wednesday last. The New Zealand National Anthem was sung, followed by the Institute prayer, read by Mrs Ferguson. All present then stood in silence in respect to all friends and soldiers who had passed on. Competitions for the day were as follows: Cup Competition for Best Bloom: Mrs Dean 1, Mrs Underwood 2. Vase of Red, White and Blue Flowers (Judges: Mesdames J. Parish and Taylor): Mrs Garrett 1, Mrs McMillan 2. Best Crop of Potatoes (grown from one potato): Mrs F. Hastie (201bs) 1. Proceeds of potatoes sold were given to Red Cross funds. Mr W. G. Park kindly donated a trophy for points prize, Mrs Dean being the first holder. Letters were received and read, acknowledging parcels received by soldiers overseas. Parcels and geoids were made and packed by Institute members. Mesdames Hemmings and Judge were in charge of the sales table. A roll call, “Where I would like to live when I retire, and why,” was much enjoyed. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Going, Garrett, Ferguson and R. Mandeno. The singing of the Ode to Friendship and the National Anthem brought a delightful afternoon to a ■ close.
