FARMERS’ UNION

WAIKATO SUB-PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE A SHOAL OF RESOLUTIONS At the monthly meeting of the Waikato Sub-Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, held at Hamilton on Friday last, a number of important resolutions were passed. As a war measure, the Minister of Transport is to be requested to cancel certain regulations and allow urgent goods such as replacements of broken parts of machinery to be delivered on Sundays by milk or cream lorries. This remit was submitted by the Te Awamutu branch. The Executive supported a proposal by the Emergency Precautions Service that the Oil Fuel Controller be requested to grant sufficient petrol to be held by farmers for emergency use in the case of power failure. The Executive is to circulate to the branches a remit from the Te Awamutu branch, “That this Executive protests to the Minister of Transport against the unfair and haphazard method of empressment of cars from rural areas, thus causing hardship, when motor cars are available in the cities.” Since October 15, reported the Waikato area officer, Mr N. F. Taylor, he had enrolled 52 members, 30 of whom were former members. Because of the petrol restrictions much of his canvassing had to be done on horseback. The Executive decided to investigate the position regarding perished manure bags, and for this purpose will request the more important branches of the Union to collect information. The question had arisen because of the fact that only a part refund had been given for perished bags, the damage to which was not, it was contended, the result of carelessness on the part of the farmers The Whatawhata branch urged that a committee be set up to investigate the matter of producer gas units under the headings: (1) Efficiency, (2) cost, (3) availability. After discussing the qualities of gas prothe meeting decided not to appoint a committee, but to leave the matter to technical experts, possibly of the Automobile Association.
