WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

THE TE KAWA BRANCH FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR The February meeting of the Te Kawa Women’s Institute was held in the Te Kawa Hall on Wednesday last, when Miss Alderson presided over a fair attendance of members. The annual garden party, which is usually held in February, was cancelled owing to petrol restrictions, and a social afternoon was held instead. The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem, and the Institute song “ Comrades and Friends,” after which Miss Alderson read a short prayer. Two letters from local soldiers overseas, Private Cliff Henderson and Alf Hegh, were read. Both letters expressed deep appreciation of the parcels received from the Women’s Institute. The following items in the afternoon’s programme were presented by members of the Institute: Pianoforte solo by Mrs J. Henderson; Mrs Hegh read a burlesque from the NZ.E.F. Times from Egypt, “ How to Pack a Parcel in the Desert”; and Mrs J. Wallis sang a solo, “ Mifanwy,” and Mrs J. McLean sang “ Holy Night.” Mrs Gudsell read an extract from a letter from her brother-in-law, Pilot Officer George Gudsell, giving a description of Port Moresby, New Guinea. Mrs Benton gave a recipe for plum jam. A pianoforte solo “ Oriental March” was played by Mrs Burton, and Miss Alderson read an interesting description of “ Britain as she is to-day.” A Bring and Buy Stall did brisk business. Afternoon tea, served by the Committee, brought a pleasant function to a close.
