WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

THE TE AWAMUTU BRANCH. Mrs Angus presided over the usual monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Women’s Institute in the Parish Hall on Friday of last week. After the singing of “ God Defend New Zealand,” Mrs Steer delight? 1 the audience with two numbers, and Mrs Giles received warm applause for two humorous items. The pianist in both cases was Miss P. North. Two new members were welcomed to the Institute. Competitions for November are to be: Spray; three plain white gems; and something now from, something old (the articles to be included in parcels for refugees). The competition prepared by Mrs Richards was won by Mrs Roberts. The cup competition resulted as follows: Pikelets: Mrs Bridge 1, Mrs Richards 2. Spray: Mrs Tailby 1. Mrs Thompson 2. Petticoat: Mrs Bali 1, Mrs Thompson 2. The garments in the last-named competition will be devoted to the benefit of refugees. THE BRANCH AT KAIPAKI. At the October meeting of the Kaipaki Women’s Institute the President (Mrs A. Goodwin) extended a warm welcome to all those present. Remits for the next Council meeting, to be held in Hamilton in November, were read and voted upon. The roll call, “ One way in which I irritate my husband or brother,” was answered by all members, and'caused much amusement. Mrs A- M. Fisher gave a very interesting resume of both the field days and the Cambridge Group Institute meetings, held in Cambridgerecently. Mrs R. Boyd had charge of the sales table, which did good trading. Competitions were won as follows: Bowl of mixed flowers: Mrs R. Boyd Three-egg sponge (jam filling; no icing): Mrs A. M. Fisher 1, Mrs D. Mitchell 2.

A quantity of toys, fancy work, <lnd books were handed in, to be sent to the lepers on Makogai Island. The meeting was brought to a close with lunch served by the hostesses, Mrs A. Cowley (junior) and Mrs D. Mitchell.
