JONAH.

Lord Linlithgow and the Mahatma met for a few hours in September but nothing came out of that interview. But it had an odd sequel. Towards end of the interview, the Viceroy was a little surprised to hear Mr Gandhi say, “Before I go there is one more thing I want from you.” The Viceroy asked him what it was. “I want to see Jonah,” said Mr Gandhi. Jonah is Lord Linlithgow’s pet turtle. When he was fishing in the lake of Dehra Dun he caught a large-size, female turtle and found in its mouth a live baby. The baby is now growing in a tank of its own. When the Viceroy took Mr Gandhi into the garden in which the pet is kept the Mahatma cooed' happily at Jonah.—Evening Standard.
